Hot sleepers cross-shop three fibers: bamboo, eucalyptus, and linen. All three genuinely run cooler than cotton. All three get sold with identical adjectives. Here's what actually separates them — from a company that only sells one of the three and will still play it straight.
Bamboo viscose: silkiest feel, best price-to-softness, easy pick for most hot sleepers. Eucalyptus (lyocell): nearly identical performance, slightly crisper hand, greener process, usually pricier. Linen: the most breathable and most durable, but textured, wrinkled, and expensive — you have to love the look. You can't go badly wrong with any; you can overpay for all three.
Same promise, different personalities.
Bamboo viscose is regenerated bamboo cellulose — round, smooth filaments that weave into a fluid, buttery sateen (how it's made). Eucalyptus sheets are usually TENCEL™ lyocell: the same idea — regenerated cellulose — via a cleaner closed-loop solvent process; the hand is smooth but a touch drier and crisper than bamboo. Linen is flax fiber, barely processed: thick, textured yarns, naturally hollow, extraordinary airflow, zero silkiness.
Notice what that means: bamboo and eucalyptus are siblings — the differences are in feel, process, and price, not category. Linen is a different animal entirely.
| Bamboo viscose | Eucalyptus lyocell | Linen | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feel | Silkiest, fluid drape | Smooth, slightly crisp | Textured, softens over years |
| Cooling | Excellent (wicks + breathes) | Excellent (marginally better wicking) | Best airflow of all, holds no heat |
| Wrinkles | Relaxes on bed | Similar | Permanent — it's the aesthetic |
| Durability | 4–6 yrs cool-washed | Similar | Decades — heirloom stuff |
| Care | Cool wash, low dry | Same rules | Forgiving, gets softer with abuse |
| Eco | Great crop, chemical process | Best process (closed loop) | Excellent, low-input crop |
| Typical price (queen) | $100–250 (ours: $129.95) | $150–300 | $200–450 |
Bamboo and eucalyptus are siblings arguing over texture. Linen is the eccentric aunt who outlives everyone.
The family portraitPick by personality, not hype.
Choose bamboo if you want maximum softness per dollar and that weightless, silky drape — the default recommendation for hot sleepers on a sane budget. Choose eucalyptus if the closed-loop process matters to you and you prefer a slightly crisper hand — expect to pay for the greener chemistry. Choose linen if you love the rumpled look, want sheets that outlast the mattress, and don't mind texture against skin. And if none of this is your problem because you sleep cold — none of these three; go flannel.
Against ordinary cotton, all three win the temperature contest — that fight is covered in Bamboo vs Cotton, and the cooling mechanism itself in Do Bamboo Sheets Actually Keep You Cool?
