Full disclosure: an older version of this article told you thread count was important. We were younger. The industry has spent thirty years teaching shoppers one number precisely because it's the easiest number to inflate — so here's the corrected, adult version of how sheet quality actually works, from a company whose own “1800 series” name we'll explain honestly in a minute.
Thread count counts threads per square inch — useful for cotton between roughly 200–600, meaningless beyond it. Counts like “1000” and “1800” come from counting multi-ply strands separately or are just series names. Fiber quality and weave determine how a sheet feels; a great 300-count outfeels a gamed 1000-count every time.

Thread count is threads per square inch, warp plus weft. Physics caps how many threads fit: past ~600, you're either weaving gauze-thin yarn (fragile, not softer) or counting each strand of a twisted multi-ply yarn separately — a 250-count fabric of 4-ply yarn becomes “1000 thread count” on the package. Same sheet, bigger number, higher price. For real cotton percale, 200–400 is the sweet spot; for cotton sateen, 300–600.
Past six hundred, thread count stops describing the sheet and starts describing the marketing budget.

So what's an “1800 series” then?
Fair question to ask us. “1800 series” is an industry-wide series name for brushed polyester microfiber — it is not a thread count, and we say so plainly: our 1800 sheets are microfiber, priced like microfiber, and excellent at being exactly that. Our bamboo line doesn't play the number game at all: 100% bamboo viscose sateen around 300, where the fiber does the softness. If a seller implies four-digit thread counts make sheets softer, you now know more than their copywriter.
