The short version
- A standard king (sometimes called an Eastern king) is one 76" × 80" mattress.

The standard king — 76 inches wide, 80 long — is the roomiest one-piece mattress most bedrooms will take. No seam, no gap, nothing to feel in the middle of the bed. Kids and dogs pile on without finding a crack. If your base is flat and you both like the same firmness, it's the simple, correct answer.
You may also hear Eastern king — that's just the standard king's older name, the way California king used to be the “Western king.” Same bed, same sheets.
The split king: two beds in one frame.
Two Twin XL mattresses side by side give you the same 76" × 80" — but on a dual adjustable base, each side raises its head and feet independently. One sleeper reads upright at 11 p.m.; the other is flat and asleep. Each side picks its own firmness, and motion transfer between the two mattresses is essentially zero.
The trade-off is the seam down the center. If you want adjustability but not the gap, the compromise is the split top king — one mattress, split only at the head.
